Evaluation 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (i.e. of film openings)

I created a 2 minute opening sequence based on the genre drama. The codes and conventions to drama is to exhibit real life situations.

The title of the film:
The title to my opening sequence is 'What goes around comes around' this relates to the genre of my opening sequence which is drama. It also relates to the actual story so this makes the audience understand why it is called 'What goes around comes around'.

Title font and style:
The title font we have used is PW Scolarpape. The reason for this is because it looks like a school type font which relates to the story of our opening sequence. This makes the audience think why and what is happening to the girl getting bullied. Finding a font for my opening sequence was a bit challenging because i wasn't sure if Scholar Paper Font would work well and look right for the scenes we have produced. However it did work well in the end because it fitted in with the whole 'school' theme.

Setting/location:
The setting and location me and my group have chosen is toilets and a block of flats. This conforms with the genre and codes of conventions as a typical place a bullying scene can take place. The toilets fits in with the scene of a girl reminicing her thoughts on her being abused etc. The block of flats relates to her being bullied whilst going to school which the uniform shes wearing shows this. We have also used a lift scene inside the block of flats. We used this because we had a canted scene of someone coming out the lift but only the shoes which gives it a mystery on who or what kind of person would it could be to bullying Chloe. The block of flats relates to a urban area and looks a bit old which reinforces the genre of Drama.

This is a drama called The Odd Girl Out it relates to my own opening sequence because we both used a toilet scene to reminisce feelings and to understand the emotion within the character. This gives the audience a sense of emotion.

Costumes and props:The costumes we chose was a school uniform to show the main story and make the audience understand it was a school girl getting bullied. For the other character we chose something with a hoodie and black leggings because the hoodie represented a hard/tough person and one of our class members wanted to black the role. A black girl was playing this tough role because sterotypically black girls are seen as trouble makers, tough, rude, etc. so we thought it would go well and fit in with the whole story. We developed the convention of a Drama film by using real life event to create a fictional story.

Camerawork and editing/Special effects:
In our film opening we have started it off with a girl standing infront of mirror. We started it off in a slow pace to give tension to our audience. The slow pace also gives the viewers and time to feel the suspense and confuses them to think why the girl would be standing infront of a mirror. It is quite common for drama films such as bullying to be standing infront of mirror to reminise all the feelings. Towards the middle of the opening sequence we stopped the slow pace music to when Ashley is getting introduced because at first it comes off as calm to create tension but now it gives it a more fast pace to make it more realistic and to show the personality of the character which is a tough person due to her being a bully.
We have used camera shots such as medium shit to show the surrounding and body of my character. We have also used medium shots on my other character. We also used panning to view the block of flats, this was used to show where the bullying was taken place. This location is common for Drama because it's in an urban area which shows it would be expected.
For editing we have used black and white effects to show that it is a flashback of what happened in the past. Another effect used was Vignette. This was used to make it clear that it was a flashback and to make it more dreamlike.

Story and how the opening sets it up:
The story is about a girl who is getting bullied and how it effects her life. The title of the film comes at the end to show the audience you would need to watch the whole film in order to know what it means.

The genre for this film Mean Girls is a comedy drama. It does not relate to our genre which is just drama but the story of the film does which is a girl who gets bullied when she starts a new school does relate to the story of our opening sequence.

Genre and how the opening suggests it:
The genre for my 2 minute opening sequence is drama. My opening sequence shows this is drama because it is based on a girl who gets bullied and this exhibits real life situations with realistic characters, settings and stories. This is a typical teen story.
The purpose of a dramatic story line is to move the audience emotionally.

How characters are introduced:
The characters are introduced in the first scene. This is the girl Chloe standing infront of a mirror. We put this as our first scene because it allows the audience to think who she could be and why she is standing infront of a mirror. The second character in my film opening who is Ashley playing the bully is introduced when we have a shot of her pushing the lift button and when she comes out of the lift we used a canted shot. We don't show her face in any of the scenes because it gives it a bit of mystery and tension on who this person could be. Ashley is introduced when it cuts to her saying 'Where you going bitch'. We thought this would work well because it gives it more of a better story.
